Humans, the new trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes suggests, were once upon a time good for something. Maybe even good at a few things.
Now they’re just to be hunted. Hunted for what? The trailer doesn’t say. Dinner? Sport? Both? Yikes.
Maze Runner director Wes Ball’s entry into the Apes franchise is set 300 years after the previous films, which starred Andy Serkis as Caesar. The planet now belongs to the apes, who have—forgive me—aped human society in terms of producing a power-hungry leader who has kept some important details about the past from his subjects.
The synopsis says:
Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (which I will call only KotPotApes for short) stars Owen Teague (It) as idealistic young ape Noa; Freya Allan (The Witcher) as Mae, a human who might be smarter than most; and Kevin Durand (The Strain) as the nasty Proximus Caesar. Peter Macon and William H. Macy are also in the cast. The screenplay comes from Josh Friedman (Terminator: Dark Fate), Patrick Aison (Prey), and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, who also have “characters created by” credit (they co-wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes).
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in theaters May 10th.
